Course Description

The English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course is designed to equip students with the advanced English language skills needed to succeed in academic settings. This course focuses on enhancing students’ ability to understand and produce academic texts, communicate effectively in academic discussions, and apply critical thinking in English. It is ideal for students planning to undertake further studies in vocational or higher education in Australia.

Apex’s EAP course offers a contemporary approach to Academic English Language Teaching, utilising effective teaching methods, a quality textbook, and additional resources. Task-based learning (TBL) is central to the course, providing learners with the necessary Academic English (AE) skills for formal communication in English-based tertiary education. The course integrates well-designed assessments and skills-based tasks, ensuring learners achieve their objectives.

Key objectives include:

  1. Mastering relevant AE language usage.
  2. Developing effective listening strategies and critical thinking skills.
  3. Cultivating independent learning and mental concentration for task achievement.
  4. Building academic vocabulary with tools like the Academic Word List (AWL).
  5. Learning to avoid plagiarism through proper citation techniques.
  6. Utilising a Learner Portfolio for self-assessment and peer feedback.

Students undergo placement testing upon arrival to ensure they join a class suitable for their proficiency level. Assessment methods include in-class participation, homework tasks, formal and informal tests, staff interviews, research assignments, computer-assisted language learning (CALL), online tasks, and group activities. Continuous feedback and regular written reports from teachers support student progress.

Training Location

Apex trains and assesses its EAP students from its Sydney, Parramatta and Melbourne campuses that are fully equipped with facilities including classrooms, computer lab, wireless internet, televisions, training resources and a student common and recreation area.

Entry Requirements and Pre-Requisites

  • Minimum age: 18 years old.
  • English language proficiency equivalent to IELTS 5.5 or completion of an Intermediate English course.

Attendance and Academic Performance

  • Student attendance is monitored as per the Monitoring Attendance Policy.
  • Academic performance is reviewed regularly in line with the Course Progress and Intervention Policy and Procedure to ensure students remain on track to achieve their learning outcomes.
